HDL is the 'good' cholesterol — reverse cholesterol transport. Low HDL is independently associated with cardiovascular risk; very high HDL doesn't necessarily mean lower risk.

Genetic; exercise; moderate alcohol. Above 2.5 mmol/L is unusual and not necessarily protective.
What does a low HDL Cholesterol result mean?
Below 1.0 mmol/L is a risk factor. Drivers: insulin resistance, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, anabolic steroid use.
