Does Masturbation Lower Testosterone?

Short answer: no, normal-frequency masturbation does not meaningfully lower your testosterone. The studies people quote are tiny, short, and measure a transient post-ejaculation dip — not your underlying hormonal status. Here's the actual evidence and what does move the number.

What the studies actually show

The most-cited paper (Exton et al., 2001) measured serum testosterone before, during, and after orgasm in 10 men. Levels rose slightly during arousal and returned to baseline after. No depletion.

A 1976 Mayo Clinic study found testosterone rose ~145% after 3 weeks of abstinence in a single subject — a curiosity, not a protocol. A 2003 Chinese study (Jiang et al.) reported a transient peak on day 7 of abstinence before returning to baseline. None of these show that masturbating lowers testosterone in any clinically meaningful way.

Larger reviews of porn-use, frequency, and androgen status consistently find no correlation between masturbation frequency and basal serum testosterone in healthy men.

What does actually move your testosterone

Sleep. One week of restricted sleep (5h/night) drops daytime testosterone 10-15% in healthy young men (Leproult & Van Cauter, 2011). Bigger effect than any 'NoFap' window has ever shown.

Body fat. Visceral adiposity raises aromatase activity, converting testosterone to estradiol. Losing 5-10% body weight in overweight men raises total T meaningfully.

Alcohol, untreated sleep apnea, chronic stress, opioids, and some SSRIs all suppress the HPG axis far more than ejaculation frequency.

If you're worried about your levels, measure them

Symptoms (low libido, brain fog, low morning erections, fatigue) and a morning blood draw beat speculation. A full panel covers total T, free T, SHBG, sensitive estradiol, LH, FSH, and prolactin. One number in isolation is misleading.

Calculate your free testosterone from total T, SHBG, and albumin with the Vermeulen formula — it's a better indicator of androgen availability than total alone, especially if SHBG is high or low.

FAQs

Does abstaining from masturbation increase testosterone?
Only transiently. A small 2003 study showed a peak around day 7 of abstinence before returning to baseline. There is no evidence that long-term abstinence raises your underlying testosterone in any clinically meaningful way.
Does ejaculation lower testosterone the next day?
No measurable drop in basal serum testosterone the next day. Levels return to baseline within hours.
What actually causes low testosterone in young men?
Sleep deprivation, obesity, untreated sleep apnea, chronic alcohol intake, opioids, anabolic steroid use, SSRIs, and primary or secondary hypogonadism. Masturbation frequency is not on that list.
How do I check if my testosterone is actually low?
Two morning (07:00–10:00) blood draws on different days, fasted, measuring total T plus SHBG and albumin so free T can be calculated. Add LH, FSH, estradiol, prolactin to characterise the cause.
