How ordering your own blood test works in Australia

1. Choose your markers

Start from what you actually want measured. Most people begin with a general health base — full blood count, iron studies, liver and kidney function, lipids, HbA1c and thyroid — then add the specific markers relevant to their situation. Indicative AUD pricing updates as you select, so there are no surprises at the pathology centre.

2. Order without a GP referral

In Australia you can request your own pathology privately. A referral from your own GP is what makes a test eligible for a Medicare rebate; it is not what makes the test possible. Privately requested pathology is arranged under a request from a registered medical practitioner working with our lab partner, and you pay for it yourself.

3. Get your blood drawn near you

Collection is a walk-in at any Laverty (Healius) pathology centre. Healius operates collection centres across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory, in metro and regional areas alike — so 'blood test near me' usually means a few minutes' drive. Bring photo ID and your request form. Fasting markers such as lipids and glucose need 8–12 hours without food; water is fine.

4. Read your results, then talk to a doctor

You receive your results with reference ranges and a plain-English explanation of what each marker measures. This is diagnostic information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Discuss anything abnormal — and any decision about medicines or ongoing care — with your GP or another registered Australian doctor who knows your history.

FORM is a diagnostic blood-testing service. We do not prescribe, supply or manage medicines. Take your results to your GP or another registered Australian doctor to discuss what they mean for you.

Blood tests without a referral: common questions

Can I get a blood test without a referral in Australia?

Yes. Australians can request pathology privately without a referral from their own GP. What a GP referral does is make eligible tests attract a Medicare rebate — without one, the test still happens, you simply pay the full private fee yourself. Privately requested panels are arranged under a request from a registered medical practitioner working with our accredited lab partner.

Where can I get blood work done near me?

Collection is a walk-in at any Laverty (Healius) pathology collection centre. Healius runs collection centres in every state and territory, including regional centres, so most Australians have one within a short drive. You do not need to book a specific site in advance — take your request form and photo ID to whichever centre suits you.

How much does a private blood test cost in Australia?

It depends entirely on which markers you select. A small single-purpose panel such as iron studies is at the low end; a broad general-health build covering blood count, iron, liver, kidney, lipids, HbA1c, thyroid and hormones costs more. The builder on this page shows an indicative AUD total that updates live as you add or remove markers, so you can see the price before you commit.

Does Medicare cover a blood test I order myself?

No. Medicare rebates apply to pathology requested by your treating practitioner where the test meets the relevant Medicare Benefits Schedule criteria. Tests you request yourself are private and are not rebatable, and private health insurance generally does not cover out-of-hospital pathology either.

How long do results take?

Most routine markers report within a few business days of collection. Some specialised assays are sent to a reference laboratory and take longer. You are notified as soon as the full set is finalised.

Which markers should I choose?

If you have no particular concern, a general-health base — full blood count, iron studies, liver and kidney function, lipids, HbA1c and thyroid function — gives the broadest picture for the money. Add targeted markers on top for a specific question: iron studies for fatigue, HbA1c and fasting glucose for metabolic health, or a hormone group where relevant. If you are unsure what is appropriate for you, ask your GP.

Is the laboratory accredited?

Yes. Collection and analysis run through Laverty (Healius), an Australian pathology provider operating NATA/RCPA-accredited laboratories to ISO 15189 standards.

Is ordering pathology yourself a replacement for seeing a GP?

No. Self-requested pathology gives you measurements. Interpreting those measurements in the context of your symptoms, history, examination and medicines is clinical work that belongs with a registered doctor. Take your results to your GP.
